Over the weekend I was struck by some words I read in Jeremiah 22:15-16:
"Does it make you a king to have more and more cedar? Did not your father have food and drink? He did what was right and just, so all went well with him. He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know me?" declares the LORD.
What really jumped out at me was the connection that the king made between his worth/value and his possession of more and more stuff. Sounds a lot like America to me!
The call of these verses seems to be to stop when you have enough...to learn the grace of being content. And instead of using all your energies to search for more and more and more, use them to stand for justice and to defend the cause of the poor.
When I let that thought sink in, I was "convicted" when I saw the question the LORD closes these verses with: "Is that not what it means to know me?" Isn't contentment what it means to know me? Isn't selflessness what it means to know me? Isn't justice what it means to know me? Isn't caring for the poor and the marginalized what it means to know me?
How much do we (especially in America) know the Lord according to these standards?
